BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar University men's basketball team bolstered its lineup Wednesday with the additions of the Anthony Cameron (6-8/270/F/Chicago, Ill.), Kain Harris (6-4/200/G/Kent State), David Muoka (6-10/210/C/Hong Kong) and Ayaan Sohail (6-3/185/G/El Paso, Texas) announced head coach
Tic Price.
The newest additions bring the Cardinals' incoming class to seven players with the additions of
Corey Nickerson,
Ellis Jefferson and
Anderson Kopp in May.
"With the incoming class we've addressed several needs," said Price. "One of the biggest needs coming into this recruiting season was finding guys who could really shoot the ball and we've been able to do that with our perimeter guys. In the post, we wanted to add some length and some guys who could bang down low and we achieved that too.
"We've added some real high-characters guys as well who take care of business in the classroom," added Price.
The newest additions consist of two transfers (one junior college) and two prep standouts. The class not only stretches beyond the borders of Texas but also adds an international flavor to the program as two (Cameron and Harris) hail from Chicago, while Muoka is originally from Hong Kong. Sohail is the lone Texan of the current group having spent his prep career at El Paso's Coronado High School.
Harris comes to LU after spending the previous two seasons at Kent State. A former three-star recruit coming out of high school, Harris guided St. Rita of Cascia to a 26-3 overall record as a senior. He averaged 16.2 points, 5.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game for the Mustangs on his way to McDonald's All-America consideration.
"Kain is an experienced player who comes to us very battle tested," said Price. "He has already played at a high level in college having spent time at Tulane and Kent State. He gives us a guard with some size, who is strong and can knock down a jump shot. He is more of a catch and shoot type player but he can be explosive."
Harris signed with Tulane out of high school where he made 66 appearances for the Green Wave. He became one of the league's top sixth men averaging better than nine points and nearly two rebounds per game, while shooting nearly 35 percent from three-point range as a sophomore. He transferred to Kent State following the 2016-17 season but utilized his redshirt during his first year with the Flashes.
Cameron comes to Beaumont following a two-year stint at Wabash Valley College. A former two-sport star, Cameron has shed nearly 70 pounds from his football playing days to focus just on basketball. Cameron guided Wabash Valley to a 22-10 record, which comes following a prep career that saw him average a double-double (11 points and 11 rebounds) during his final two high school seasons. He also averaged three blocks per game as a senior.
"Anthony is going to be a huge presence in the paint for us," said Price. "He is a big, strong individual whose best basketball is ahead of him. Not many guys in our conference are going to be as big and strong as he is. We have to continue to develop his skills, but I believe he can really make a mark for us in the post."
Muoka brings even more size to a Cardinals' roster that will be without the services of four-year starter
Josh Nzeakor who exhausted his eligibility following the 2018-19 season. Muoka made an immediate impact with the Athlete Institute Basketball Academy in Ontario averaging 10.9 points, 11.8 rebounds and 3.1 blocks per game contest. Due to his efforts on the court, Muoka was among those being considered for the Ontario Scholastic Basketball Association's (OSBA) Defensive Player of the Year award following a season that saw him lead the OSBA in rebounds and blocked shots.
"Muoka is an athletic big man who can run the floor," said Price. "He can shoot the basketball, but he is also active on the defensive side of the ball as well. He has a 7-3 wing span and will provide us with a shot-blocking presence on the court. He has a very high ceiling as a player and is another member of this class who we think will continue to grow as a Cardinal."
Muoka is one of four current Athlete Institute Academy players to sign a NCAA Division I scholarship this year.
Sohail is a two-star athlete who turned himself into one of the state's top scorers as a senior. He averaged 25.6 points and nearly three assists, rebounds and steals per contest as a senior. During Coronado's postseason run this past season Sohail led his squad averaging better than 30 points per game.
"Ayaan is an athletic point guard who can shoot," said Price. "Another thing we really like about him is that he is already a very good on-ball defender and may already be our best on-ball defender. As a freshman coming in, he is going to fight for some playing time. He brings the versatility of being able to play the one or two for us."
