SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Lamar University jumped out to an early lead and never looked back knocking off Incarnate Word, 7-0, Sunday afternoon in San Antonio. The Cardinals jumped out to a quick lead and never looked back.
Big Red took every match in straight sets except for one – that one match coming at No. 3 singles where junior
Sanja Jolic won a no-doubter in the super tiebreak, 10-3. In addition to the five victories in straight-sets, the Cardinals also posted two shutout sets and held their hosts to a single game in two other sets.
"I'm very proud of how our ladies fought this afternoon," said LU head coach
David Wong. "We got up early and never allowed UIW to get back in the match. We knew UIW wouldn't give up and they kept challenging us on every serve, but I thought we came into the match ready to play."
The Red and White jumped out to a quick lead by taking the doubles point. The Cardinals needed only one doubles match for the point because UIW was forced to default on court three due to an injury. Sophomore
Natalia Garcia Molina added to the Cardinals' lead with her victory at court No. 5. Garcia Molina never allowed UIW's Taylor Parkinson to get into any kind of a rhythm posting a 6-1, 6-0 victory.
After the victory at No. 5, the rout was on, as the Cardinals turned to the top of their lineup for the next two wins. Juniors
Bianca Vitale and
Jasmin Buchta picked up straight setters on courts 2 and 1, respectively to give LU a 3-0 advantage. The Southland's other Cardinals never made a serious run after that dropping the remaining matches.
The Cardinals will continue their season-long four-match road swing Friday when they travel to New Orleans, La., to take on the UNO Privateers. The match against UNO will begin at 11 a.m.
