Cardinals Sweep Doubleheader

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – Lamar University was dominant Friday afternoon sweeping Prairie View A&M in a doubleheader. The Cardinals took the opening match, 6-1, and came right back in the second match to post a 4-0 shutout victory over the Panthers.

"Our first match was solid in both doubles and singles," said LU head coach Scott Shankles. "We won all three doubles matches, with two new partnerships, by comfortable scores. This led to us winning five first sets and taking four of those matches. We were very happy for Brock getting his first dual match victory. He played great today and keeps getting better."

The Cardinals wasted little time getting on the scoreboard Friday sweeping through all three doubles matches to claim a 1-0 advantage. Freshman Axel Vila Antuna extended the lead with his straight-sets victory at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-2, over PVAMU's Rodrigo Yoshikata.

The lead ballooned to 3-0 with the Cardinals straight-sets victory on court No. 4. Sophomore Carlos Paton Canal locked up the first match and ended any thought of a comeback from the Panthers with his victory over Prairie View's Jorge Juarez Caballero at No. 3 singles.

The Panthers final jumped on the scoreboard with their victory at No. 2 singles, but it was too little too late as Big Red closed out the first match with wins at courts 6 and 5, respectively, which included Brock Lauer's clutch victory at No. 6 singles. Entrenched in two tough sets, Lauer defeated the Panthers' Taqel Lewis, 7-6 (7-3), 7-5.

It was more of the same for the Cardinals in the second match, as the Red and White didn't allow Prairie View a point. The Cardinals cruised to a win in the second match after jumping out to an early lead in doubles – with victories on courts 1 and 3 – and following that up with three quick singles wins.

"We were very pleased to finish off the day with a shutout victory," said Shankles. "We had good doubles play which gave us the momentum heading into singles competition. It was a long day but it's good to get back in the win column."

In the second match, it was Lauer again has he gave LU its second point of the match. The Cardinals close out the match with victories from Paton Canal and sophomore Arthur Serafim.

The Cardinals return to action Saturday with a match against South Alabama. The match against the Jaguars will begin at 9 a.m. from the Thompson Family Tennis Center.
