BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar University had to wait out a weather delay of more than three hours Sunday morning but they finally stepped on the court at 12:15 p.m. to face South Alabama. The Jaguars brought a nine-match win streak with them to the Golden Triangle and the Cardinals bid to end that streak came up just short, 4-0.
"We have experienced these type of delays fairly regularly this year, and last year," said LU head coach
Scott Shankles. "You have to be able to make the mental adjustments and change your warmup and prep time. It just has to be done in situations like this. We got off to a bit of a slow start in doubles, but I don't really think that had as much to do with the delay as South Alabama is playing really well right now. They're a very talented team."
The Jaguars took the opening lead of the match by winning decisions on courts two and three. The duo of sophomore
Nicolas Mayr and
Axel Vila Antuna were up 5-3 on the first court when play was halted.
USA took the momentum from doubles and carried it over into singles play rattling off first set wins on all six courts. The Cardinals had a chance to put an end to the run at No. 2 singles when Mayr pushed the Jaguars' Lois Cloes to a tiebreak before falling, 7-6 (8-6).
Vila Antuna was trying to flip the momentum at court No. 1 when he rebounded from an opening-set loss to defeat USA's Sacha Modica, 6-3 in the second set, but play was halted shortly thereafter as the Jaguars rattled off three-straight wins on courts 4, 5 and 3 respectively.
"South Alabama came here riding the wave of now a 10-match win streak," said Shankles. "They played with confidence and made the plays they needed to get the victory. Right now, we're trying to string victories together during matches and when you're young you will run into situations like this. South Alabama will be ranked this year."
The Cardinals have no time to think about Sunday's loss as they will be right back on the court Monday to face Bucknell. The match against the Bison will begin at 11 a.m. from the Thompson Family Tennis Center.
