Cards Remain Unbeaten in SLC Play

BEAUMONT, Texas – The Lamar University Cardinals remained unbeaten in Southland Conference play on Wednesday night after a 78-65 victory over Nicholls. The win for the Cards is its 38-straight victory at the Montagne Center.

With the win, Lamar improves to 15-4 on the season and 8-0 in SLC action, while Nicholls falls to 11-9 on the season and 5-3 SLC play.

The Cards had four players score in double-figures led by Miya Crump with 22 points. Moe Kinard followed with 21. Jadyn Pimentel and Chastadie Barrs rounded out the double-figure scorers with 12 and 11 points respectfully.

"This was a great win for us tonight," remarked Head Coach Robin Harmony. "We had a really great game as a team. The team came out and played a great 40 minutes and put on a great show. Whoever was in the Montagne Center saw a great game."

LU shot 39 percent for the contest and forced the Colonels into 21 turnovers. Barrs led the Cards with five steals in the contest. LU shot 55 percent (11-for-20) on three-pointers in the first half of the game. With the win, Lamar winning streak is now at 10 straight.

Lamar came out with a fast start that saw LU hit its first two three-pointers of the game, and just over two minutes into the contest, LU led 8-3. After Nicholls trimmed the lead down to four, Crump hit another three, extending the Cards lead back to seven points, 13-6. After taking a seven-point lead, LU and Nicholls went back and forth trading hoops. Crump hit her third three-pointer of the quarter, putting the Cards ahead, 22-17 after one quarter of play.

The Cardinals stretched the lead to double figures early in the second quarter. After a Kinard three-pointer the Cards held a nine-point lead, 28-19. The lead grew to double-figures after a Crump free throw and Barrs layup. Three minutes later, the 12-point lead for the Cardinals, grew to 19 points after back-to-back threes by Kinard and Jadyn Pimentel. Lamar's lead grew to as many as 23 points, 46-23, in the first half. Nicholls scored the final six points of the half and LU took a 48-29 lead into halftime.

After pushing the lead back to 22 points, 51-29, on a Kinard three, the Colonels battled back and a three by Cassidy Barrios cut the LU lead down to 15 points, 51-36. LU slowly grew the lead back to 20 points and after a Crump layup, LU led 58-38. Later in the third quarter, an old fashion three-point play by Crump put the Cards ahead 64-44. Nicholls scored the final four points of the quarter and LU led 64-48 after three quarters of play.

The Cardinals shooting looked to stay hot as they grew the lead to 20 points after a Kinard three a minute into the fourth quarter. With the Cardinals leading by 20, 72-52, the Colonels started chipping away at the Lamar lead. Nicholls went on an 11-2 run over four-minute stretch cutting the Cards lead down to 11, 74-63. That would be as close as Nicholls would get for the remainder of the contest and LU came away with a 78-65 victory.

Lamar returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 2 when they travel to Lake Charles, La. to face McNeese in Southland Conference action. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. from the H&HP Complex.
