Cardinals Struggle at North Texas

DENTON, Texas – Lamar University got a win from junior Jasmin Buchta at the No. 1 singles position but struggled to find offense from the other courts dropping a 6-1 decision at North Texas Saturday afternoon.

The Mean Green took the early 1-0 lead with victories at Nos. 1 and 3 doubles. North Texas added to their lead with victories at the Nos. 2 and 3 singles positions. Buchta got the Cardinals on the scoreboard with an impressive decision on court one. Buchta recorded a 6-2, 6-3, decision over Maria Kononova to trim the deficit.

With the Cardinals on the board, LU was trying to mount a rally by forcing the match at No. 5 singles to a third set. Sophomore Natalia Garcia Molina took the first set from UNT's Minying Liang, 6-2, but Liang fought back with the victory in the second set. In the tiebreaker neither player was willing to budge but Liang outlasted Molina, 11-9, for the point.

The Mean Green closed out the day by picking up victories at Nos. 4 and 6 singles for the final score.

The Cardinals will be back in action Sunday when they make the short trip to Fort Worth to take on TCU. The match against the Horned Frogs will begin at 10 a.m.
