FRISCO, Texas - Lamar University's Sandra Nygard has been picked as the Southland Conference Goalkeeper of the Week, as announced by the league on Tuesday.

Nygard earned her first career Southland weekly award for her incredible efforts in the net against Central Arkansas and Northwestern State, two of the best offensive teams in the conference. The freshman from Sola, Norway, stared down 27 shots and allowed just one goal against UCA, propelling Big Red to a 3-1 victory over the Bears that avenged LU's lone SLC loss of 2017. Nygard followed up that performance with another impressive appearance, recording 11 saves and shutting out the high-powered Northwestern State offense that entered the game leading the NCAA in shots per game and ranked among the best in goals scored in 2018.

This marks the fourth SLC Player of the Week honors for Lamar in 2018;  Kelso Peskin and Jocelyn Hanrath took the SLC Offensive and Goalkeeper honors, respectively, in the first week of the season, and Juliana Ocampo captured the SLC Offensive award in Week 3.

The Cards return to action on Friday when they travel to Sam Houston State. That game will be followed by a road match at Stephen F. Austin on Sept. 30 and a home game against Southeastern Louisiana on Oct. 5.
