BEAUMONT, Texas – The Cardinals' season may have come to an end, but that doesn't mean the members of the Lamar University baseball team have a break. Several returning Cards and several offseason additions will spend their summers with the NCAA-sanctioned wood bat summer leagues.
Almost half of the team will stay near home this summer, competing in the
Texas Collegiate League. Those student-athletes will compete for three different teams in the league. The
Acadiana Cane Cutters in Youngsville, La., will feature
Nathan Gabryszwski,
Cole Secrest,
Rhett McCall, and
Marcus Olivarez.
Robin Adames,
Chase Kemp,
Cole Coker, and newcomer Garrett Hofstad will be just down the road in Bryan, Texas, playing for the
Brazos Valley Bombers, and newbie Matt McDonald and
Brendan Dunkleberger will compete near the Arkansas border for the
Texarkana Twins.
13 members of the 2019 Cardinal squad will be traveling significantly further from the friendly confines of
Vincent-Beck Stadium, competing for teams in the
Northwoods League, the
Great West League, the
Hamptons League, the
New England Collegiate Baseball League, the
Sunflower Collegiate League, the
Expedition League, the
Alaska Baseball League, and the
Coastal Plain League.
Erik Key will be completing a foreign tour in his summer ball campaign, competing in the
Northwoods League for the
Thunder Bay Border Cats in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada; a 1,509-mile journey.
Newcomer Tyler Smith will travel even further than Key but stay within the United States; he'll play in the
Great West League for the
Yuba-Sutter Gold Sox (formerly the Marysville Gold Sox) in Marysville, Calif. That's 2,054 miles from Beaumont.
Across the country from Tyler Smith will be
Logan LeJeune; he'll spend his summer in the
Hamptons League playing ball for the
Southampton Breakers, a 1,650-mile excursion. Austin Smith, a newcomer, will also play in the Hamptons League as a member of the
North Folk Ospreys, 1,649 miles from The Beck. Also in the Northeast will be newbie Anthony Quirion in the
New England Collegiate Baseball League; he'll play for the
Upper Valley Nighthawks.
Newcomers Reese Durand and Brennan Lambert will head to the
Sunflower Collegiate League this summer to compete for the
Cheney Diamond Dawgs in Cheney, Kansas, and
Chet Jones will travel about 500 miles further north to Gering, Nebraska to compete in the
Expedition League for the
West Nebraska Pioneers.
The longest-ranging Cardinal is future Big Red bat and younger brother of Carlos Correa,
JC Correa, who will head over 4,200 miles to Anchorage, Alaska, to play in the
Alaska Baseball League for the
Anchorage Bucs.
Rounding out the 2018 summer ball roster are
Douglas Palmer,
Avery George,
Cole Girouard, and
Ryan Erickson, spending their summer together in Virginia on the roster of the
Peninsula Pilots in the
Coastal Plain League.
