Cards Host HBU in SLC Opener Wednesday

BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar University looks to extend its home court winning streak to 34 games on Wednesday, Jan. 2, when they open Southland Conference play against Houston Baptist University. Tip is set for 7 p.m. at the Montagne Center.

The Huskies come to Beaumont with a 5-5 record and are coming off a 68-60 victory over ULM. The win over ULM snapped a three-game losing streak for Houston Baptist. In the win, the Huskies had four players score in double figures, led by Sophie Taylor, who had 16 points. HBU shot 47.3 percent for the contest.
 
The Huskies have three players averaging in double-figures this season. They are led by Lauren Calver, who is averaging 14.0 points per game. Amanda Johnson and Sophie Taylor round out the double-figure scorers averaging 12.9 and 10.5 points respectfully. Taylor Kollmorgen leads the team in rebounding averaging 7.8 rebounds per game.
 
As a team, HBU is averaging 73.5 points per game and are allowing teams to score 66.7 points per game. They are shooting 40.9 percent from the floor on the season. The Huskies are shooting 29.8 percent (48-for-161) on threes this season. On the defensive end, the Huskies are limiting opponents to shoot 35.7 percent from the floor. They are forcing 15.1 turnovers per game and are only committing 13.9.
 
The Huskies were picked to finish 10th in the Southland Conference Preseason Poll.
 
LAST TIME OUT – PACIFIC
Trailing at halftime, Lamar University used a strong second half, where they shot 57 percent from the floor to erase a five-point deficit and defeat University of the Pacific, 82-66. The win extended the Cards home winning streak to 33 games.
 
Chastadie Barrs and Jadyn Pimentel led the Cards with 23 points. The 23 points for Pimentel is a career-high. Barrs led LU in rebounds with 10 and steals with 10 for her second straight game with a triple-double. Barrs now has six triple-doubles in her career.
 
Lamar forced Pacific into 32 turnovers in the contest and recorded 25 steals. The 25 steals in a game is tied for tenth most in a single game in LU history.
 
"Everyone committed to play full court and quarter court defense tonight as we were playing a good team," remarked Head Coach Robin Harmony. "In the second half, we changed our press and gave them a different look and we were able to get some steals from it. We then locked up on the defensive end and limited Pacific's opportunities to score after giving them second and third chances early."

LU returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 5 when they host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The Cards and Islanders tip at 2 p.m.
