Cardinals Open Season on Road Tuesday

BEAUMONT, Texas – The Lamar University women's basketball team opens its 2018-19 season on Tuesday, Nov. 6 when they travel to Lafayette, La. to University of Louisiana. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m. at the Cajundome.
 
Lamar women's basketball team was the unanimous pick to win the Southland Conference title in a poll of the conference's women's basketball coaches and sports information directors. This marks the second time in as many seasons that the Cards have been predicted first among SLC teams.
 
The Cards continued to rank among the best in the Southland Conference when the league announced its 2018-19 preseason all-conference teams earlier this year. Two Cardinals, Chastadie Barrs and Moe Kinard, were named to the First Team, the most of any member school.
 
LU has two players that will be looking to join the 1,000 point club this season in Kinard and Barrs. Entering this season, Kinard has scored 982 points in her collegiate career, well Barrs has scored 947 points. Currently, there are 14 members of the 1,000 point club for LU. Cassie Brooks sits 14th with 1,010 points scored in her career. Kalis Loyd scored 1,967 points in her career for the Cardinals, which is the most in LU hisotry
 
Lamar at Louisiana – Tuesday, Nov. 6, 5 p.m.
The Ragin' Cajuns are coming off a 2017-18 season that saw them finish 17-16 on the season. This season Louisiana was picked to finish seventh in the 2018-19 Coaches' Preseason Poll. The Ragin' Cajun received 75 points in the preseason poll. 
 
During the 2017-18 season, the Ragin' Cajuns averaged 60.4 points per game while allowing 62.3 points per game. They shot 39.2 percent from the floor on the season. Louisiana was 144-for-487 on three-point attempts, averaging 4.4 made three-pointers per game. The Ragin' Cajuns were outrebounded by 1.4 rebounds per game. The Ragin' Cajuns ranked 67th in the NCAA in free throw attempts and ranked 88th in the NCAA free throws made.
 
The 2018-19 Ragin' Cajuns return four starters and five letter winners from last year's team. Louisiana has seven newcomers to this year's team. The Ragin' Cajuns have five freshmen, three sophomores and four juniors on the roster. Louisiana is led by Garry Brodhead, who is in his seventh season at the helm. He has a record of 109-85.

The Cards return to action on Saturday, Nov. 10 when they host McMurry University at 7:30 p.m. in the Cardinals home opener. Prior to the tip, Lamar will have a ring ceremony, celebrating its 2017-18 Southland Conference regular season title.
