LUBBOCK, Texas –
Murielle Hlavac was one kill shy of a double-double, but the Lamar University women's volleyball team fell in straight sets to UC Riverside on the final day of the Red Raider Classic hosted by Texas Tech.
Hlavac finished the day with 10 digs and nine kills for the Cardinals (1-5), but the Highlanders held on for close wins in each set, claiming the sweep by scores of 25-21, 25-21 and 26-24.
Tomar Thomas led the Cardinals with 11 kills, while
Ivette Dim added seven kills.
Amy Hollowell had six kills and a match-high 18 digs.
Haley Morton had a match-high 30 assists for LU. Morton represented the Cardinals on the all-tournament team.
The Cardinals hung tough with the Highlanders (7-2) throughout the match, but were hurt by 33 attack errors. UC Riverside had 16 attack errors on the afternoon.
Kaiulani Ahuna led UC Riverside with 12 kills. Fabiana Rosas had 15 digs in the win.
The Cardinals looked poised to extend the match after taking a 20-17 lead in the third set, but UC Riverside went on a 6-2 run to get back into the match. The Highlanders closed out the contest on Yuliya Ushakova's second kill of the day.
The Cardinals return to action next weekend at the Maverick Classic hosted by UT Arlington. LU faces UC Davis and Arizona State on Friday before taking on the host Mavericks next Saturday.
