ARLINGTON, Texas –
Tomar Thomas and
Dannisha House each collected 11 kills against Pac-12 power Arizona State, but the Lamar University volleyball team couldn't pull off the upset in a 3-0 loss to the Sun Devils to close out the first day of the Maverick Classic hosted by UT Arlington on Friday.
Earlier in the day, the Cardinals (1-7) dropped a 3-0 decision to UC Davis.
House had 11 kills with no errors on 20 chances against Arizona State (8-2), while Thomas had three errors on 22 chances in the match. Arizona State won the first set 25-19, but had trouble with the pesky Cardinals in the next two sets which saw a combined 20 ties and nine lead changes, with the Sun Devils claiming 25-23 and 25-18 victories.
The Cardinals had leads of 17-14 and 21-20 in the second set, but couldn't put away the Sun Devils.
Molly Shade had 38 assists, while
Murielle Hlavac had nine digs for LU. Oluoma Okaro had 15 kills for Arizona State.
Against UC Davis, the Cardinals held their own before falling by scores of 25-20, 25-18 and 28-26. LU had a 23-19 lead in the third set after Thomas and House combined for a block to put two points away from winning the set, but UC Davis (7-5) stormed back to seal the straight-set win.
Thomas led the Cardinals with eight kills. Hlavac had six kills and a team-high 12 digs. Emily Allen had 10 kills and 10 digs for UC Davis.
The Cardinals wrap up their participation in the tournament when they square off against the host Mavericks at noon Saturday. The Cardinals open their home schedule when they host Prairie View A&M in a non-conference match at 7 p.m. Tuesday in McDonald Gym. For tickets, please call 409-880-1715, or
