ARLINGTON, Texas –
Ivette Dim and
Tomar Thomas had eight kills apiece, but the Lamar University women's volleyball team fell in straight sets to the host UT Arlington Mavericks on the final day of the Maverick Classic on Saturday.
The Cardinals (1-8), who hung tough against UC Davis and Arizona State on Friday, couldn't recover from a slow start against the Mavericks (6-6), who won by scores of 25-11, 25-13, 25-18.
"It's definitely a disappointing loss," LU coach
Alan Edwards said. "They just outplayed us."
The Cardinals had a season-low attack percentage of .040 with 26 kills and 22 errors on 99 attempts. The Mavericks had a .337 percentage, posting 38 kills and just nine errors on 86 chances. LU especially struggled in the early going, with seven kills and 11 errors in the first set on 28 chances for a minus .143 attack percentage.
Kaitlyn Nutt had 14 digs for the Cardinals, while
Molly Shade had 24 assists.
Qiana Canete had 14 kills to lead UT Arlington, which snapped a five-match losing streak. Libbie Vickers had 11 digs.
The Cardinals look to put an end to their seven-match skid when they open a three-match homestand by hosting Prairie View A&M in a non-conference contest at 7 p.m. Tuesday at McDonald Gym. Fans attending Tuesday's match will receive a free LU volleyball schedule T-shirt while supplies last. The Cardinals remain home to host Northwestern State at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Southland Conference opener and Central Arkansas at 1 p.m. Saturday.
