FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Lamar University softball team dropped a pair of games at the Wooo Pig Classic on Saturday, dropping an 8-6 decision to Nebraska in the morning before falling to the host Arkansas Razorbacks 9-4 in the evening.
Nebraska 8, LU 6
Kelly Meeuwsen was a double shy of the cycle to lead the LU offense, but the Cardinals fell in their first-ever meeting with the Cornhuskers.
The Cardinals trailed 4-2 after five innings, but rallied to tie the game at 4 in the top of the sixth before Nebraska broke the game open with four runs, three of them unearned, in the bottom of the sixth. Meeuwsen hit a two-run homer to right field in the seventh, but the Cardinals could do no more damage.
Brittany Rodriguez and
Corina Thornton had two hits apiece for the Cardinals.
Laura Napoli took the loss in relief for LU, allowing four hits and four runs, one earned over two innings.
Gina Metzler went 4-for-4 with two RBIs for Nebraska (4-12).
Arkansas 9, LU 4
Brittany Rodriguez had three hits for LU, but the Cardinals could not maintain a 3-1 lead as they fell to the Razorbacks for the second consecutive day.
The Razorbacks exploded for six runs in the fourth off Napoli (3-6), who dropped her second relief decision of the day. Tori Cooper's three-run triple was the big hit in the inning for Arkansas (16-1).
Ashley McDowell and
Shelby Henderson had two hits apiece for the Cardinals (6-13).
The Cardinals wrap up the weekend with a rematch against Nebraska at 10 a.m. Sunday.
UP NEXT: Following this weekend, the Cardinals return to the LU Softball Complex for a seven-game homestand, starting with the Southland Conference opener against Northwestern State at 5 p.m. March 10.
