Lady Cards roll over Huskies

Jan. 24, 2015

HOUSTON – Dominique Edwards became the 12th player in Lamar women's basketball history to score at least 1,000 points in her career, reaching the milestone in Lamar's 80-64 win at Houston Baptist in a Southland Conference game Saturday.

Edwards, who needed nine points to reach the milestone, finished with 16 points. She added 11 rebounds for good measure to notch her eighth double-double of the season and 19th of her career.

“I'm happy to get the 1,000 points. I'm even happier it came in a win,” Edwards said. “I'm sure my mom was listening to the game. She's probably crying right now.”

Edwards had 11 points in the second half as Lamar (9-10 overall, 6-2 Southland) outscore Houston Baptist 48-29 in the second half.

“Dominique really stepped it up in the second half,” Lamar coach Robin Harmony said. She didn't just break the plateau today, she shattered it.”

Saturday's win was a team effort for the Lady Cardinals, as four players finished in double figures. JaMeisha Edwards led Lamar with 21 points. Addesha Collins came off the bench to score a career-high 17 points, while Kiandra Bowers just missed a double-double, finishing with 15 points and nine rebounds.

“This was a good win for us,” Harmony said. “We had a tough home loss to SFA on Thursday, but we bounced right back.”

One of the big differences in Saturday's game was Lamar's performance from the free-throw line in the second half. After shooting just 22.2 percent (2-of-9) from the charity stripe in the first half, Lamar was 21-of-24 (87.5 percent) in the second half.

“They took away our 3-point shots, so we started to drive more in the second half,” Harmony said. “We got to the line more and we hit our free throws.”

Neal Monet led Houston Baptist (8-10, 2-5) with 21 points and 13 rebounds. Anna Strickland also had a double-double for HBU with 12 points and 14 rebounds.

The Lady Cardinals are at Sam Houston State at 6:30 p.m. Thursday before returning home to host Abilene Christian at 4 p.m. Jan. 31.

Thursday's game will be broadcast live at www.LamarCardinals.com. The Abilene Christian game will air live on KLVI (AM 560) and be simulcast at www.LamarCardinals.com. For ticket information, visit LamarCardinals.com, or call (409) 880-1715.
