EDINBURG, Texas - The Lamar Lady Cardinals came up just a bit short in their bid for their first victory of the season Friday at the UTPA tournament in Edinburg, Texas. Lamar dropped the opening match of the day to host UTPA, 3-1 (25-22, 17-25, 25-23, 25-14). It was a similar story in the afternoon match as Lamar dropped a 3-1 (25-21, 25-27, 25-12, 25-19) decision to Northern Arizona.
The Lady Cardinals dropped a close first set to UTPA despite battling the Broncs every step of the way. Trailing by three, 19-16, Lamar scored three consecutive points to tie the match at 19, but the Broncs scored six of the next nine to win the set, 25-22.
Lamar bounced right back in the second set, jumping out to a three-point lead and extended their advantage to 10 points before picking up the set victory. The Broncs tied the set at nine, but Lamar went on a 13-4 run to build the double-digit advantage to tie the match.
Despite a match-high 15 kills from Cortney Moore, and three Lady Cardinals in double-figure kills LU was unable to record a win in the final two sets of the opening match. Lamar led by three late in the third before UTPA rallied for six-straight points to take the lead and eventually the match.
The second match was almost a mirror image of the second as Moore led three Lady Cardinals in double-figures in a 3-1 setback to Northern Arizona (5-0). The Lumberjacks jumped out to a 1-0 lead in a close first set, to see Lamar rally to even things up in the second with a 27-25 win. The Lady Cardinals were unable to hold the momentum after halftime as NAU won the final two sets for the win.
Lamar returns to action Saturday to face Texas Tech in an 11 a.m. match. The contest against the Lady Raiders will be the Lamar's third and final contest in the UTPA tournament.
