Soccer battles to 1-1 tie at HBU

Sept. 28, 2014

HOUSTON – Kristin Bos extended her Lamar career record for assists as the Lady Cardinals battled to a 1-1 tie with host Houston Baptist in a Southland Conference women's soccer game Sunday.

Bos picked up her 15th career assist on Alejandra Amador's first-half goal, but the Lady Cardinals (3-6-1 overall, 1-1-1 Southland) couldn't capitalize on numerous other opportunities. Lamar outshot HBU 27-16 for the contest, but 21 of those shots were off the mark.

Amador's goal with 7:35 remaining in the first half gave Lamar a 1-0 lead. Bos started the play with a corner-kick pass to Jannet Hernandez, who fed Amador all alone in front for her first goal of the season.

Houston Baptist (2-5-3, 1-0-2) tied it with 30:38 remaining in regulation on a goal by Kristi O'Brien.

Lamar dominated the two overtime periods, outshooting the Huskies, but couldn't get the game-winner.  The Lady Cardinals had the best opportunity in extra time when Marie Lund's shot beat HBU goalkeeper Patty Walrath, but was turned aside by an HBU defender.

Lamar goalkeeper Bailey Fontenot, who entered the game with a Southland-Conference leading 56 saves, made four saves for the Lady Cardinals. Walrath made four saves for the Huskies, three of those in overtime.

“It was an up-and-down game,” Lamar coach Orlando Cervantes said. “We're getting our chances, but we're not doing a good job of finishing them. We need some players to step up.”

The Lady Cardinals host a pair of Southland Conference games next weekend. Nicholls provides the opposition at 7 p.m. Friday, while Southeastern Louisiana comes in at 1 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are available online at www.LamarCardinals.com. Tickets may also be purchased over the phone at (409) 880-1715 or at the Montagne Center ticket office from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. weekdays. Tickets will be available at the Lamar Soccer Complex box office one hour prior to kickoff for both contests.
