Soccer comes up short vs. Nicholls

Oct. 3, 2014

BEAUMONT, Texas – All good things must come to an end. The Lamar Lady Cardinals found that out the hard way Friday night, as their dominance over the Nicholls Colonels came to a halt with a 2-0 loss in a Southland Conference women's soccer game.

Lamar had won six straight contests over Nicholls before Friday's loss in front of 254 disappointed fans at the Lamar Soccer Complex. Lamar now leads the overall series 6-2.

“Our effort wasn't good enough,” Orlando coach Orlando Cervantes said. “I've told this team they're good enough to beat anybody on our schedule when they play the way they're supposed to play. That didn't happen tonight.”

Lamar (3-7-1 overall, 1-2-1 Southland) certainly had its chances against Nicholls (7-5-0, 3-2-0). The Lady Cardinals misfired on a couple of glorious scoring opportunities, and were thwarted by Nicholls goalkeeper Haley Golden when they did get shots on goal. Golden made eight saves as she picked up her first shutout of the season while improving to 2-0.

The Lady Cardinals suffered a bit of misfortune on what proved to be the winning goal as the Colonels scored on an own goal with 14:09 remaining in the first half. The Colonels made it 2-0 wit6h 35:10 in the second half when Jess Coates scored her fourth goal of the season. Emily Werenskiold was credited with the assist.

Lamar goalkeeper Bailey Fontenot finished with five saves.

Kristin Bos led Lamar with five shots, including a team-high three shots on goal.

The Lady Cardinals return to action at 1 p.m. Sunday as they host Southeastern Louisiana at the Lamar Soccer Complex. Tickets are available online at www.LamarCardinals.com. Tickets will be available at the Lamar Soccer Complex box office one hour prior to kickoff.
