Soccer loses at Louisiana-Lafayette

Sept. 14, 2014

LAFAYETTE, La. - Kimmy Albeno extended her Lamar career goal-scoring record, but the Lady Cardinals dropped a 7-2 decision at Louisiana-Lafayette in a non-conference women's soccer game Sunday.

Albeno scored her 27th career goal just 82 seconds into the game to give Lady Cardinals a 1-0 lead when she beat Louisiana-Lafayette goalkeeper Alexias Stricklin to the top right corner.

Kristin Bos also scored for Lamar (1-5), which dropped its fifth straight game. Taylor Mitchell added an assist for Lamar, which outshot Louisiana-Lafayette 21-15.

Lamar outshot Louisiana-Lafayette 16-8 in the first half, but trailed 4-2 at intermission.

"We played a strong first half, but we gave up a couple of bad goals," Lamar coach Orlando Cervantes said. "We have to be tougher when we face adversity."

Yazmin Montoya scored two goals for Louisiana-Lafayette (4-3).

Lamar doesn't have much time to fret about the loss. The Lady Cardinals host Texas Southern at 6 p.m. Monday in a makeup of Friday's postponement.

"We definitely need a win," Cervantes said. "It's our last non-conference game, and we need some confidence heading into Southland Conference play."

Tickets for Monday's game are available at www.LamarCardinals.com. Tickets are also available at the Montagne Center ticket office starting at 8 a.m. Monday, or by calling (409) 880-1715. Tickets will be available at the Lamar Soccer Complex box office one hour prior to kickoff.
