Soccer blanks Texas Southern

Sept. 15, 2014

BEAUMONT, Texas – Bailey Fontenot tied the Lamar record with her 12th career shutout to highlight the Lady Cardinals' 4-0 win over visiting Texas Southern in a non-conference women's soccer game Monday.

Fontenot, a senior out of nearby Hardin-Jefferson High School, made five saves as she equaled the career mark set by Jennifer Gibbs.

It was a strong effort by Fontenot, who was lifted after halftime of Sunday's 7-2 loss at Louisiana-Lafayette after allowing four goals and making just one save.

“The key was her confidence throughout the whole game tonight,” Lamar coach Orlando Cervantes said of Fontenot. “She was very aggressive and very physical tonight.”

Kimmy Albeno led the Lamar offense with two goals as the Lady Cardinals (2-5) snapped a five-game losing streak. Freshmen M.J. Eckart and A.V. Vigil each scored their first career goals for Lamar.

“To come back without any rest and play as well as we did was great,” Cervantes said. “We needed a game like this to boost our spirits heading into conference play.”

Albeno scored both of her goals in the first half, as she extended her own school record to 29 career goals. Eckart and Vigil added second-half goals as Lamar improved to 4-0 all-time against the Lady Tigers.

Lamar outshot Texas Southern (0-6) 20-7 for the game. Texas Southern goalkeeper Liliana Hernandez made five of her seven saves in the second half, as she did her best to keep the Lady Tigers in the game.

“I thought we had a much better second half,” Cervantes said. “We scored early in the first half and seemed to get away from what worked. We stayed to the plan in the second half.”

The Lady Cardinals host Northwestern State at 7 p.m. Friday in the Southland Conference opener for both squads.

Tickets are available online at www.LamarCardinals.com. Tickets are also available from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays at the Montagne Center ticket office or by calling (409) 880-1715. Tickets will be available at the Lamar Soccer Complex ticket office one hour prior to kickoff.
