Brian Morgan Joins LU Football Staff

Aug. 6, 2014

BEAUMONT, Texas - Brian Morgan has been named running backs coach announced Lamar head football coach Ray Woodard Wednesday afternoon. Morgan replaces Kevin Barbay who left Lamar last month to take a position at Colorado State. With the addition of Morgan, recently hired assistant Arlington Nunn will shift over to coach receivers.

"Brian has a lot of the qualities that we were looking for," said Woodard. "He has a special teams background which is an area where I felt like we needed some help. Brian also has a reputation of being a great recruiter. This is a great fit for Lamar."

Entering his 10th season of coaching, Morgan comes to Lamar after spending the past two seasons at Prairie View A&M where he worked with the Panthers running backs and linebackers. He also served as the teams special teams and recruiting coordinator. During his time with the Panthers, Morgan became very familiar with the talent in east Texas having recruited east Texas, including Houston.

Morgan got his first taste of southeast Texas talent coaching the high school ranks. He served as an assistant coach at Port Arthur Memorial for three seasons where he coached linebackers and special teams. Following his three seasons in the high school ranks, Morgan accepted a position as a graduated assistant coach at North Texas.

Morgan's coaching career began at Grambling State where he spent the 2005 season overseeing the special teams. The start of Morgan's coaching career came on the heels of a standout playing career at GSU. A two-time All-America selection, Morgan graduated from Grambling as the school's all-time leading scorer. A three-time All-SWAC selection, Morgan helped guide the Tigers to back-to-back HBC national titles.
