BEAUMONT, Texas - Lamar goalkeeper Bailey Fontenot made a season-high 12 saves, but it wasn't enough for the Lady Cardinals in a 1-0 loss to north Texas in a lightning-shortened non-conference women's soccer game Sunday.

Fontenot made a number of spectacular saves in the contest for Lamar (1-3), but was beaten on a corner kick by Karla Pineda 17:09 into the second half.

"It was a fluky goal," Lamar coach Orlando Cervantes said of Pineda's tally. "The wind got a hold of it and pushed it into the net."

Jackie Kerestine made four saves as she picked up her third shutout in as many games for North Texas (3-0-0). The Mean Green were playing their first game in a week after having their scheduled contest at Houston on Friday canceled because of lightning. Lamar dropped a 2-0 decision to visiting Rice on Friday.

"North Texas was rested, and I think you could see that in the second half," Cervantes said. "I thought we played a much better game than we did against Rice. If we would have had that effort against Rice, I think the outcome would have been different."

The Lady Cardinals (1-3) resume their five-game homestand with a pair of non-conference games next weekend. Texas State comes to town at 7 p.m. Friday before Prairie View A&M pays a visit at 1 p.m. Aug. 7.

"We have some injuries, and I hope some of those will heal before the weekend," Cervantes said. "I'm excited to see what we can do when we have our full lineup intact."

Tickets for all Lamar soccer home games are available at the Montagne Center box office from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays. Tickets are also available online at www.LamarCardinals.com, or by calling (409) 880-1715. Tickets are available at the Lamar Soccer Complex box office one hour prior to kickoff. The Montagne Center ticket office will be closed on Labor Day.
