Lady Cards drop match to Wake Forest

Box Score Aug. 31, 2014

Box Score

HOUSTON - After playing a number of close sets on Friday, the Lamar volleyball team was engaged in another tight affair on Saturday, but unfortunately for the Lady Cardinals, Wake Forest was able to make the necessary plays late in each set to pick up a 3-0 (26-24, 26-24, 25-21) victory at the Athletics/Alumni Center on the campus of the University of Houston.

It was another stout performance by the middle blocker duo of Cortney Moore and Chelsea Grant. Moore, a junior out of Houston, recorded nine kills and hit .400 to secure a spot on the Houston Cougar Classic All-Tournament team. She hit .400 or better in all three matches over the weekend. Grant collected 11 kills at a .360 clip to go along with a team-best four blocks.

Autumn Taylor was once again the team leader in kills with 12, and she also added 10 digs for her second double-double of the weekend. Ashley Ellis was tasked with running the offense and racked up match-high 34 assists, and Alaina Dock led the team in digs with 12.

LU opened the first set in impressive fashion, leading for the majority of the match before the Demon Deacons rode an 8-2 run to grab their first lead at 21-20. A Taylor kill evened things back up, and then Grant was involved in a block and registered a kill over the next four points to hand LU set point at 24-22. Wake bounced back with four straight points to grab the early advantage.

The next frame unfolded in similar fashion as the Red and White grabbed a 22-17 lead over the school out of Winston-Salem, N.C. Once again, the Demon Deacons responded emphatically, picking up nine of the next 11 points, including the last four, to win 26-24 for a second time.

In all, LU played in five sets this weekend that weren't decided in regulation.

The Lady Cards, who hit .324 and .333 as a team in the opening two stanzas, were held to a .167 attack percentage in the third. The Demon Deacons held the lead for much of the frame, but it was very much in question late as a Moore kill and a Wake attack error cut the deficit to one at 18-17. LU was unable to keep the momentum going however, conceding each of the ensuing four points.

LU will return to action next weekend with a trip to Edinburg to participate in the UTPA Tournament.
