Women's hoops falls to Northwestern St.

Feb. 15, 2014

BEAUMONT, Texas - Dominique Edwards piled up her eighth double-double of the season, but the Lamar Lady Cardinals lost their share of first place in the Southland Conference with a 67-60 home loss to Northwestern State on Saturday.

Edwards had 15 points and 13 rebounds for the Lady Cardinals (14-10 overall, 9-4 Southland). Lamar fell one game behind Central Arkansas with five games remaining in the regular season.  Lamar would secure the top seed in next month's Southland Conference Tournament by winning those five games that includes a March 1 game at Central Arkansas.

"We didn't come to play today," Lamar coach Robin Harmony said. "We made too many bad turnovers and committed too many silly fouls."

Lamar, which committed just eight turnovers in Thursday's win over Stephen F. Austin, had 20 turnovers against Northwestern State that led to 30 points for the Lady Demons (14-11, 7-6).

"A lot of those were unforced turnovers," Harmony said. "It was frustrating."

Shauna Long also had 15 points for Lamar. Long drained three 3=pointers to give her 101 for her career, putting her sixth on Lamar's all-time list.

Gia Ayers had 13 points for Lamar, while Alice Robinson added eight points and 11 rebounds.

"I think we got a little complacent about being tied for first," Ayers said. "We definitely didn't play the way we are capable of."

Trudy Armstead and Keisha Lee had 17 points apiece for Northwestern State (14-11, 7-6). Kourtney Pennywell added 12 points for the Lady Demons.

Northwestern State went 23-of-32 (71.9 percent) from the foul line, while Lamar was 7-of-14 (50.0 percent). The Lady Demons were 21-of-44 (47.7 percent), while Lamar was 24-of-63 (38.1 percent).

"We took 19 more shots than they did, so we definitely had our chances," Harmony said. "There's no way we should shoot this poorly in our own building."

Lamar returns to action at 4 p.m. Feb. 22 when it hosts Sam Houston State in the first of a hoops doubleheader. The Lamar men face Sam Houston State in the nightcap. For ticket information, call (409) 880-1715, or visit www.LamarCardinals.com.

"We just have to be ready next week," Ayers said. "We still want to be the top seed."
