CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - A stout offensive effort, led by Brianna Brink, helped Texas A&M-Corpus Christi defeat the Lamar volleyball team 3-0 (16-25, 17-25, 16-25) Saturday afternoon at the Dugas Wellness Center in the final contest of the 2014 season.
Brink led the Islanders (18-15, 11-5 Southland Conference) with 15 kills and a .367 hitting percentage, and had only four attack errors. Lamar finished its season with a 5-23 overall record and 5-11 league mark.
Chelsea Grant and Cortney Moore each led the Lady Cardinals with eight kills apiece, and Grant finished the match with a .316 hitting percentage. Amethyst Hollowell had four kills and Autumn Taylor had two.
As a team, Lamar had a .087 hitting percentage, the second-lowest output this season and worst since conference play opened. Errors were a factor again in the match with 15 total attack errors, 11 service miscues and four reception errors.
Ashley Ellis had 22 assists and Megan Schwartz, in her final match, had 10 digs. Lauren Stahlman had eight digs.
Lamar held tight through the first set tied at 11, and weren't down by more than three until the Islanders broke open an 8-2 run to take the game.
Corpus Christi jumped up 4-0 in the second set, and Lamar worked into that lead with a 7-4 run to only be down 8-7. From there, the Lady Cards would never get closer than one in the second game.
As a team, the Islanders hit for a .240 percentage and started off the match with a .290 hitting percentage in the first set.
Ivy Baresh had eight kills, Brittany Gilpin had six and Kristyn Nicholson and Ashley Phelps had four kills. Nicholson had a team-high 29 assists and Kate Klepetka had 17 digs.
