HOUSTON, Texas - Two Huskie players registered in double-figure kills and led Houston Baptist past the Lamar volleyball team 3-0 (18-25, 14-25 and 23-25) Saturday afternoon at Sharp Gym in Southland Conference action.
Houston Baptist (13-13, 7-4 Southland Conference) finished with a .343 hitting percentage led by Jessica Wooten with 18 kills and Megan McStravick with 16. Lamar (3-20, 3-8) finished the match with seven service errors, four receiving miscues and 15 attack errors.
Cortney Moore topped the Lady Cardinals with 13 kills and had a .440 hitting percentage in the match. She had only two errors, one dig, one solo block and one block assist.
"When our middles have games like Cortney did today, it should open the outsides. Today we just didn't get the production we are used to from the left side," said head coach Alan Edwards.
Chelsea Grant finished with the second highest hitting percentage (.235) and added five kills and two block assists.
"Those girls are only getting better," said Edwards. "They come in and continue to work on their skills."
Autumn Taylor finished the match with eight kills and seven errors. Amethyst Hollowell had six kills and Kelsey Beard had two.
Both Ashley Ellis and Jenna Jackson accounted for 16 assists apiece. Megan Schwartz had 13 digs and Hollowell had eight.
Lamar had a shot at pushing the match into the fourth set with a 21-21 score in the third. HBU scored on kill by McStravick and attack error by Autumn to make it 23-21. Lamar answered with an error on McStravick to make it 23-22, but kills from Allison Doerpinghaus and Wooten- split by a kill from Grant- ended the match.
"We got rolling in the third set and our offense starting to get in rhythm, but it was just too late," said Edwards.
LU jumped out to an early lead (7-4), but Houston Baptist capitalized on a service error from the Lady Cards and two kills from Wooten to make it 7-7.
Kayla Armer led HBU with 43 assists and Haley Hoffman had a team-high 13 digs followed by McStravick.
The next four matches for Lamar will be in the McDonald Gym starting with Stephen F. Austin at 7 o'clock on Tuesday. Thursday's match will be against New Orleans at 7 o'clock and Saturday's is slated for 1 o'clock against Southeastern Louisiana.
