Box Score Oct. 14, 2014 Box Score HUNTSVILLE, Texas - Despite 18 kills (with only one attack error) from sophomore Chlesea Grant, the Lamar Lady Cardinals volleyball team came up just short at Sam Houston State Tuesday night, 3-1 (25-21, 25-22, 27-29, 26-24). The loss drops Lamar back to .500 in Southland Conference play, 3-15/3-3 SLC.
The rematch started off eerily similar to the first match played in Beaumont. The Bearkats jumped out to a two-set lead, only to watch Lamar battle back to take the third set, and nearly force fifth. But, the Bearkats were able to cut off the rally and pick up their 12th win of the season, (12-7/5-1 SLC).
None of the sets Tuesday were easy as the largest margin of victory was four points. That victory came in the first set and the margins decreased with every set. The `Kats picked up a three-point win in the second set before the Lady Cardinals rallied for a 29-27 victory in set three.
It appeared Lamar was on the verge of forcing a fifth set against SHSU after falling behind by two sets for the second time this season. But, SHSU was able to survive the scare and escape with a 26-24 win in the fourth set.
Grant was one of two LU players in double figures. She led the way with 18 kills, while junior Cortney Moore added 11. The Lamar duo didn't have much help behind them as only three other players recorded a kill Tuesday.
The Lady Cardinals return to action Thursday when they travel to Conway, Ark., to face Central Arkansas. The match against the Sugar Bears is set to begin at 7 p.m.
