Soccer falls to Sam Houston State

Oct. 10, 2014

BEAUMONT, Texas – Friday nights just don't seem to be the night for the Lamar Lady Cardinals.

The Lady Cardinals fell to 1-4 under the Friday night lights this season as they dropped a 2-0 decision to visiting Sam Houston State in a Southland Conference women's soccer game at the Lamar Sports Complex.

Lamar (4-8-1 overall, 2-3-1 Southland) squandered an opportunity to move ahead of the Bearkats in the Southland Conference standings. Lamar entered the day in sole possession of the sixth, and final, berth in the Southland Conference Tournament. Lamar ended the night in the same spot, but needs a win at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Sunday to remain ahead of the Islanders.

Jordan Jarzombek opened the scoring for Sam Houston State (5-8-0, 4-2-0) with 10:31 remaining in the first half as she took a nifty pass from Shelby McDaniel and beat Bailey Fontenot from in close. That was just moments after Fontenot robbed Jarzombek.

The Bearkats made it 2-0 less than 20 minutes into the second half when Allie Johnson picked up a loose ball during a scramble in front of the Lamar goal and beat Fontenot for her seventh goal of the season.

Fontenot finished with six saves for Lamar, while Kylie Hambleton made four saves for Sam Houston State. The Bearkats held an 18-12 edge in shots for the game.

The Lady Cardinals are at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 1 p.m. Sunday before returning home to host McNeese State at 7 p.m. Friday.

With just five games remaining on the schedule, Lamar coach Orlando Cervantes knows the importance of each game.

“We have to bounce back,” Cervantes said. “We have to come out and want it more than they do.”
