Oct. 12, 2014CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Lamar Lady Cardinals saw their postseason hopes take a serious hit Sunday as they dropped a 4-0 decision to host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in a Southland Conference women's soccer game.
The Lady Cardinals (4-9-1 overall, 2-4-1 Southland) fell out of the sixth, and final, berth in next month's Southland Conference Tournament with four games remaining.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (3-5-3, 2-3-1), which moved ahead of Lamar in the standings, erupted for all four of its goals in the second half. Yvette Franco opened the scoring for the Islanders just 200 seconds into the second half as she converted a pass from Hailey Sutton.
The Islanders made it 2-0 when Alyssa Miller scored on a penalty kick 16:38 later. Sutton and Bri Lugo scored late goals for the Islanders to seal the win.
Lamar goalkeeper Bailey Fontenot allowed the first three goals and made three saves. Zoey Stephenson played the last 13:50, allowing one goal.
Megan Delaney made four saves to earn the shutout for the Islanders. Lamar outshot Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 15-11 overall, but the Islanders held a 7-4 edge in shots on goal. Taylor Mitchell led Lamar with three shots.
The Lady Cardinals host McNeese State in a crucial Southland Conference game at 7 p.m. Friday at the Lamar Soccer Complex. Tickets are available at www.LamarCardinals.com.
