BEAUMONT – Aaron Olivas continued his hot start at the plate this season and Jude Vidrine knocked in a pair of runs, but unfortunately for the Lamar baseball team it wasn’t enough as the visiting Washington Huskies picked up an 8-2 win over the Cardinals at Vincent-Beck Stadium on Friday evening.
With the loss, the Cards drop to 4-2 this season, and the Huskies improve to 2-3. The two sides will return to action for a doubleheader on Saturday as play continues in the annual YMBL Cardinal Classic.
Olivas, who is hitting .500 so far this season, went 2-for-4 at the plate, and Vidrine ended 1-for-4 with a two-out double in the eighth to score a pair of runs. Darian Johnson, Brad Picha and Garret Autrey also picked up hits. However, led by three-hit days from Jayce Ray, Robert Pehl and Trevor Mitsui, the Huskies out-hit the Cards 15-6.
Jonathan Dziedzic appeared to start off well enough, putting down the first two hitters he faced in five pitches, but the third fouled off a number of pitches before picking up an infield single. The Huskies capitalized on the opening, lacing four more two-out singles to score three runs before Dziedzic stranded the bases loaded with a flyout to end the frame.
UW went on to add a pair of runs in the third, and a single score in each of the fourth, sixth and seventh innings to take an 8-0 lead after seven.
Dziedzic finished the game with 10 hits allowed and six earned runs over the course of four innings to drop to 0-1 this season. Jerin Spikes made his LU debut in relief, pitching four innings of two-run ball and striking out five.
On the mound for the visitors from Seattle was Austin Voth, and the junior right-hander impressed, striking out 14 while walking just one in 7.2 innings of work before Vidrine pegged him with the two-run double in the eighth.
Washington and Lamar will begin Saturday’s doubleheader at 1 p.m., and the second game will follow approximately 30 minutes after the first.
