NEW ORLEANS – Sierra Whittaker picked up 10 kills and Megan Schwartz controlled the defense effort for the Lamar volleyball team, but it wasn’t enough as the Lady Cardinals fell 3-0 (25-15, 25-20, 25-22) at Tulane at Devlin Fieldhouse.
Schwartz had six kills to go along with a team-best 10 digs, three blocks and three service aces. Cortney Moore also had six kills and three blocks, but unfortunately for the Lady Cards, the Green Wave held the advantage offensively, out-hitting LU .298 to .122.
Molly Duge and Erika Rojas were also strong defensively, recording eight digs apiece.
After Tulane (15-2) grabbed the first two sets of the match, Lamar’s best chance for a set victory came in the third, which featured eight ties and six lead changes. Despite giving up the first four points of the set, a pair of Schwartz service aces and a Whittaker kill handed the Lady Cards their first lead at 16-14.
The two sides would go back and forth over the next several serves with Lamar pulling ahead late on a Moore and Schwartz block at 22-21, but the Green Wave surged back with four consecutive points to secure the victory.
The match marked the end of the non-conference slate for the Lady Cards, who fell to 4-13 on the year. The team will return to Southland action on Saturday with a meeting against Sam Houston State at McDonald Gym. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
