SAN MARCOS, Texas - Sunday was a good news, bad news day for the Lamar University women's soccer team.
The bad news was that the Lady Cardinals dropped a 2-0 Southland Conference contest at Texas State. The good news came shortly after as Lamar (7-7-2 overall, 4-2-1 conference) learned it clinched a berth in the Southland Conference Tournament following McNeese State's loss at UTSA.
"One of the goals we set at the beginning of the season was to return to the conference tournament," Lamar coach Dewi Hardman said. "But we're not just satisfied to make the tournament. We want to go there and make some noise."
Lamar still has some unfinished business before the tournament, as it wraps up the regular season with conference home games against Central Arkansas at 7 p.m. Friday and Northwestern State at 1 p.m. Oct. 30.
As for Sunday's loss at Texas State, the host Bobcats (11-5-0, 6-1-0) scored one goal in each half for the win.
"We knew it was going to be a tough game," Hardman said. "We played double overtime on Friday and we were very tired today and it showed. The girls gave everything, and I can't fault the effort we put out."
Felicia Leask and Kendell Webber each had a goal and an assist for Texas State. Lauren Frazier made three saves for the shutout. Jennifer Gibbs made four saves for Lamar.
Despite the loss, Hardman remained upbeat.
"We end the regular season at home, and we have a chance to get a good seed in the tournament," he said. "We did a lot of good things today."
