Lady Cards battle to tie at UTSA

Oct. 21, 2011

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Amber Thornhill's second-half goal lifted the Lamar University women's soccer team into a 1-1 tie with host UTSA in a Southland Conference game Friday night.

Thornhill scored on a rebound with 17:33 remaining in regulation as the Lady Cardinals (7-6-2 overall, 4-1-1 conference) remained unbeaten on the road in Southland play this season. Lisa Topping picked up the assist for Lamar.

Jennifer Gibbs made seven saves for Lamar, including two big stops in overtime.

Anka Grotle scored midway through the first half on an assist from Edith Lopez to give UTSA (6-7-2, 3-2-1) the 1-0 lead.

"We are very excited to have come away with a draw," Lamar coach Dewi Hardman said. "Having gone down by a goal and come back to tie shows great spirit. We knew this would be tough, but we are not an easy team to beat as well."

Lamar fell into third place, a half-game behind second-place Texas State, which posted a 2-1 win over McNeese State on Friday. Lamar will be at Texas State for a crucial contest at 1 p.m. Sunday.

"We have another difficult contest Sunday, but a win will put us back in second, so we must go try our best," Hardman said.
