BEAUMONT, Texas - Freshman Brateicka Mock made the most of her first career start for the Lamar University women's basketball team on Saturday.
Mock, who started in place of All-American candidate Jenna Plumley, who missed the game for family reasons, scored a career-high 10 points while playing a career-high 35 minutes to lead the Lady Cardinals to a 62-56 come-from-behind win over UT Arlington in a Southland Conference game at the Montagne Center.
"My teammates told me to be confident and do the things I know I can do," Mock said. "I just went out there and gave it my best."
Lamar (13-4 overall, 2-1 SLC) seemed to miss Plumley in the first half, as the Lady Cardinals trailed by 37-30 at intermission after being down by as many as 10 points. But the Lady Cardinals gradually chipped away at the lead in the second half.
"We have Division I players. We're not a one-dimensional team," Lamar coach Larry Tidwell said. "Brateicka gave us a solid 35 minutes, and many other players stepped up."
Monique Whittaker notched her second double-double of the season for Lamar, finishing with 19 points, 11 rebounds and a career-high five steals. Kalis Loyd and Jasmin Henderson added 11 points apiece for Lamar.
"Monique played a great game for us, and Jasmin hit some big shots for us," Tidwell said. "We got contributions from a lot of people."
Shalyn Martin scored a game-high 21 points to go along with nine rebounds for UT Arlington (4-11, 1-2). Malaika Green had 11 points, while Jasmine Smith had 11 rebounds for the Mavericks.
Lamar is idle for a week before traveling to Central Arkansas for a game at 2 p.m. Saturday.
