SAN MARCOS, Texas - The Texas State Bobcats rallied for five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to claim an 8-7 win over the Lamar University Cardinals in a Southland Conference baseball game Friday night.
Clayton Farhat had three hits and Wade Mathis blasted a three-run home run for Lamar (15-7 overall, 2-5 SLC). Pablo Salinas also had three hits for the Cardinals.
Texas State (12-8, 5-2) started its rally when Kyle Livingstone hit a one-out solo home run. That opened the floodgates, as the Bobcats rapped out six hits in the inning and capped the inning when Jeff McVaney scored the winning run on a wild pitch.
Lamar starter Matison Smith picked up a no-decision after allowing 10 hits and six runs, all earned, in 7 1/3 innings. Reliever Garrett Steward (1-2) was charged with the loss after allowing three hits and two runs, both earned in 1/3 of an inning.
Texas State starter Carson Smith also got a no-decision after surrendering 10 hits and seven runs, all earned, in seven innings.
Reliever Michael Pitts (2-0) picked up the win with an inning of scoreless relief. Garrett Carruth set down Lamar in order in the ninth to earn his second save.
The series continues with a single game at Texas State at 3 p.m. Saturday and concludes with a single game at 1 p.m. Sunday at Texas State.
