Lady Cardinals Trip Roadrunners

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Jenna Plumley scored 16 points and set the Southland Conference record for 3-pointers in a season to lead the Lamar University women's basketball team to a 66-63 victory over UTSA on Saturday.

Plumley drained 3-pointers to give her 94 on the season, surpassing the mark of 91 established by Shawnta Vanzant of Lamar in the 2000-01 season. Plumley also had six assists for Lamar (22-6 overall, 12-2 conference), as the Cardinals maintained sole possession of first place in the Southland Conference.

Darika Hill had 15 points, Kalis Loyd had 14 points and Brittney Williams added 11 points and a game-high nine rebounds.

Williams played her 117th game in a Lamar uniform, moving her into a tie with Jojuana Rogers for the most games played in program history.

The Lady Cardinals took the lead for good when Trashanna Smith hit a jumper with 3:42 remaining to give Lamar a 60-59 edge. Lamar sealed the win when Loyd hit a free throw with 3.9 seconds remaining. UTSA was unable to get off a shot before the buzzer.

"It was a hard-fought win," Lamar coach Larry Tidwell said. "We didn't shoot well, but our defense played really strong."

Whitney York led UTSA (15-12, 9-5) with 20 points and eight assists. Ashleigh Franklin had 17 points and Amber Gregg added 13 for the Roadrunners.

Lamar held a 42-32 rebounding edge for the game.

The Lady Cardinals return to action at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The Islanders entered Saturday tied with Stephen F. Austin one game behind Lamar for first place in the conference. The Islanders hosted Stephen F. Austin at 7 p.m. Saturday, with the winner guaranteed sole possession of second place in the conference.
