Hance's heroics lift Lamar

Oct. 3, 2010

BEAUMONT, Texas - Lisa Hance scored with 44 seconds remaining in regulation to give the Lamar University women's soccer team a 1-0 win over visiting Southeastern Louisiana in a Southland Conference game Sunday.

Hance picked up a loose ball in front of the Southeastern Louisiana cage and rifled a shot past goalkeeper Lacey Bockhaus to propel Lamar (4-6-1 overall, 2-0-0 SLC) to its second straight conference win. The goal gave Hance, Lamar's leading scorer, a career high five for the season.

Lamar goalkeeper Jennifer Gibbs made 14 saves for her second consecutive shutout and fifth of her career. The 14 saves are a Lamar record for saves in a shutout. Gibbs extended her scoreless string to 272 minutes, 2 seconds dating back to Wednesday's 1-1 double-overtime tie with Houston Baptist.

Gibbs made her biggest save of the game with less than five minutes remaining as she stoned Southeastern Louisiana's Maiya Cooper from in close. That set the stage for Hance's heroics.

"We made big plays at the right time," said Lamar coach Dewi Hardman, who saw the Lady Cardinals tie a program record for wins in a season. "We knew it would be a war of attrition. It was our third game in five days. It was going to be a necessity for us to battle through adversity, and that's what we did."

Bockhaus made eight saves for Southeastern Louisiana (7-2-3, 0-1-1), last season's Southland Conference tournament champion.

Lamar returns to action at 7 p.m. Friday with a conference game at Stephen F. Austin.
