Lady Cards set record for victories

Oct. 29, 2010

BEAUMONT, Texas - Lorna Maudslay's goal with 3:33 remaining in regulation lifted the Lamar University women's soccer team to a 3-2 win over visiting McNeese State in a Southland Conference women's soccer game Friday night.

With the victory, Lamar (5-10-3 overall, 3-4-2 SLC) set a single-season record for wins in a season.

"We've improved every year," said third-year Lamar coach Dewi Hardman. "We're excited about winning games and setting the record."

Maudslay's game-winner came less than two minutes after Johna Germany ahd tied the game for McNeese State (4-12-3, 15-3).

Lamar had taken a 1-0 lead at the 9:58 mark on Rachelle Barry's first goal of the season as she headed in a corner kick by Lisa Topping. That ended Lamar's scoreless streak at 378 minutes, 57 seconds. McNeese State's Brittany Sanders tied the game on a penalty kick with 4:00 remaining in the first half.

The Lady Cardinals regained the lead just 27 seconds into the second half on an own goal. That lead stood up until Germany's goal that set the stage for Maudlsay's heroics.

With the win, Lamar remained in contention for the sixth, and final, spot in the upcoming Southland Conference Tournament. The Lady Cardinals need Central Arkansas to lose or tie at Nicholls on Sunday to gain a berth in the tourney.

"We'll be on the edge of our seats until Sunday," Hardman said. "The conference is evenly balanced. We're certainly hoping we can go to the tournament for the first time."

Friday's game marked the final home appearance for four Lamar seniors: Erin Binagia, Beth Squires, Kari Busch and Brittany Ross.
