SAN MARCOS, Texas - The Lamar University women's soccer team had its first-ever appearance in the Southland Conference Tournament come to a disappointing end with a 1-0 loss to UTSA in Thursday's first-round game.
UTSA's Anka Grotie scored with just 8:24 remaining in regulation to break a scoreless tie and lift the Roadrunners to victory. The Roadrunners (12-7-1) won despite being outshot 18-11 by Lamar.
"The game was a microcosm of our season," Lamar coach Dewi Hardman said. "We certainly had plenty of scoring chances, but we just weren't able to finish."
Lamar almost sent the game into overtime, but Angie Guillory's blast rocketed off the crossbar with less than two minutes remaining.
"We're a young team. We had four freshmen and a sophomore up front at times," Hardman said. "It's not acceptable to miss those chances, but it's understandable."
Lisa Hance had six shots for Lamar (5-11-3), while Guillory had five. UTSA goalkeeper Dacia Webb made nine saves to earn the shutout.
Hardman is optimistic about the future of Lamar soccer, which just wrapped up its fourth season.
"When I came here, I took over a team that was 0-18 in its first year," Hardman said. "We're going in the right direction, and I believe we have the people in place to keep going in that direction."
