BEAUMONT - UTSA showed why it has now won eight straight matches on Saturday afternoon at McDonald Gym as the Roadrunners picked up a 3-0 Southland Conference volleyball victory over Lamar.
The Lady Cardinals, who will play their final two home matches of the season this week, fell to 9-12 on the year and 5-5 in conference play. UTSA leads the SLC West Division with a 9-1 conference mark and a 15-9 overall record.
Lamar led the first set by a 23-21 score and was serving, but UTSA ran off the next three points to swing the tide and grab a 24-23 lead. A Whitney Walls attack error allowed Lamar to tie the set at 24, but the Roadrunners picked up a pair of kills to earn a 26-24 win.
"We continue to give the other team too many points instead of making them earn them," said LU head coach Justin Gibert. "We've got to learn to be aggressive but not make the kind of costly errors that can cost you the match."
The second set was also close the whole way with UTSA grabbing a 21-19 lead on a Megan Wimbish service ace. LU sophomore setter Alex Morford picked up a kill to cut it to one point, but Lamar would get no closer as UTSA won 25-21.
UTSA held on to the momentum after the intermission in closing out the match with a 25-19 set three victory.
The Roadrunners hit a solid .283 for the match, committing just 13 attack errors, while limiting the Lady Cardinals to a .111 attack percentage. Kendra Rowland had a match-high 13 of UTSA's 41 kills.
Lamar was led by Sierra Whittaker who finished with 10 kills. Megan McStravick chipped in with seven kills, while Cynthia McCollum and Jayme Bazile added six apiece. Sophomore Angel Colyar finished with a match-high 15 digs for Lamar.
The Lady Cardinals will look to avenge an earlier loss, and halt a short two-match losing streak, on Thursday when Nicholls visits McDonald Gym for a 7 p.m. match.
