Nebraska Outscores Lamar, 7-1

Sept. 4, 2009

LINCOLN, Neb. - Nebraska scored four times in the first half to pull away from Lamar for a 7-1 win at the NU Soccer Field Friday evening.

When Lorna Maudslay score for the Lady Cardinals in the 35th minute to cut the Husker lead to 2-1, it looked like the LU might be able to gain some momentum. But unfortunately Nebraska answered just over three minutes later to regain its two-goal advantage.

Nebraska scored once more before the halftime whistle to take a 4-1 lead into the intermission. The Huskers benefitted from a penalty kick goal 95 seconds into the second period, along with scores in the 61st minute and in the final minute for the 7-1 ledger.

Maudslay's goal was her first of the season, tying her for the team lead with three other players. Among those other three is Lisa Topping, who assisted on the LU goal and now has a team-high four points on the year.

Lamar (0-4) was outshot 27-6 overall and 15-3 in shots on goal. Maudslay and Kari Davila each took two shots to lead the LU attack. Lisa Hance and Beth Squires added one shot apiece.

Goalkeeper Jennifer Gibbs made eight saves in 90 minutes.

The Lady Cardinals started seven newcomers and used 16 players in the match. Nebraska played 19.

Lamar will remain in the Cornhusker State and play at Creighton in Omaha Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.
