Lamar Falls Victim To Quick-Strike Creighton Offense

Sept. 6, 2009

OMAHA, Neb. - The Lamar women's soccer team allowed two first-half goals in a 30-second span as they lost to Creighton 3-0 at Morrison Stadium Sunday afternoon.

Lamar (0-5) started out on the offensive, with Beth Squires taking two shots in the first four minutes. Creighton (5-1-1) then took a pair of its own attempts, including one off the crossbar in the 22nd minute.

Then Creighton got on the scoreboard when Mary Zapapas and Brittney Neumann scored 30 seconds apart.

Zapapas' unassisted score came at the 27:57 mark just after the Lady Cardinals were unable to control a long free kick into the box, as it fell to Zapapas who beat goalkeeper Jennifer Gibbs into the left side of the net for a 1-0 Bluejay lead.

The Bluejays added their second goal just 30 seconds later when Neumann took a cross-field pass from Emily Orbell and finished in the right corner from 15 yards out.

Orbell posted the third goal of the game in the 66th minute when she connected on a shot from 20 yards out that beat a diving Gibbs for the final 3-0 margin.

Gibbs finished with seven saves and the Lady Cards also were credited with a team save.

Squires led Lamar with three shots overall and two on goal, while Lorna Maudsaly, Lisa Topping and Lorna Gover had one attempt each.

Lamar totaled six shots in the match but were held without an attempt over the final 47 minutes.

Lamar will return to action Sunday, Sept. 13 when it plays host to Texas Southern at the Cris Quinn Soccer Complex in west Beaumont at 2 p.m.
