Lamar Edged By North Dakota State, 2-1

Aug. 30, 2009

WACO, Texas -- For the second time in three games this season, the Lamar soccer team took the lead, only to see it disappear before the final whistle, falling to North Dakota State 2-1 in a neutral-site contest at Betty Lou Mays Field on Sunday.

Sophomore Lisa Hance put Lamar (0-3) ahead in the 30th minute when she took a pass from junior Beth Squires and beat the Bison goalkeeper Kalani Bertsch. It wsa her first goal of the season on her first shot attempt.

But NDSU struck an emotional blow just before the end of the first half, getting an unassisted goal from Megan Dean with five tics left on the clock.

The score remained tied at 1-1 for the opening 24 minutes of the second stanza until Becky Iwanicki scored the eventual game-winner at the 79:18 when her ball from 30 yards slipped just over sophomore goalkeeper Jennifer Gibbs' hands.

Gibbs finished with one save on three NDSU shots on goal.

NDSU outshot Lamar 11-8 overall but the Cardinals held a 6-3 edge in shots on goal. Squires led all players with four shots as she put three on goal.

Lamar will head north to the Cornhusker State to face Nebraska and Creighton next weekend. Friday's game against the Huskers in Lincoln is set for 5 p.m. Sunday's game versus Creighton in Omaha will kickoff at 1 p.m.
