Box Score
HOUSTON - Brian Taylor collected three hits, including a two-run home run in the first inning, and scored four times as Lamar snapped a five-game losing streak to Houston with a 12-3 win at Cougar Field Wednesday.
Taylor also added to his team-leading RBI total with two while the Cardinals scored in double figures for the first time in nearly three weeks.
Lamar (25-17) scored twice in the first on Taylor's fifth long ball of the year and added four in the third and one in the fourth to take a 7-0 lead before Houston pushed one across in the bottom of the fourth. But the Cardinals responded with two in the fifth on Chris Dunkin's two-run double to right center.
UH (17-23) scored once in the sixth on a Chris Wallace solo home run to cut the LU lead to 9-2. Lamar scored three more times in the ninth on a Tyler Link single and another 2-run double by Dunkin into the left field corner. He finished with three hits and four RBI, his most since driving in six against Prairie View on March 11.
Spencer Cuniff (1-0) earned the win in his first start, while four relievers held the Cougars in check for much of the night. UH never loaded the bases and only had two men on at the same time on four occasions.
Ty Stucker (0-2) took the loss for Houston.
The win marked the first for Lamar at Houston since 1992, snapping an eight-game skid.
Lamar (11-10 SLC) will now turn open a six-game homestand at Vincent-Beck Stadium this weekend when it plays host to Northwestern State (17-19, 10-9 SLC). The Demons are .002 pct points ahead of the Cardinals for fifth place in the SLC standings entering the weekend. Friday's game will begin at 6:30 p.m., Saturday's at 2 p.m. and Sunday's at 1 p.m.
