WACO, Texas - Despite a solid performance by freshman Courtney Trevino, the Lamar University volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision to SMU in their final match of the Baylor Invitational at the Ferrell Center on the Campus of Baylor University.

The loss gives the Lady Cardinals a 1-1 record for the year and in the tournament. Their final match against Baylor, which was scheduled to get under way at 7:30 p.m., was cancelled in order for the LU team to return to Beaumont before mandatory evacuations of the city begin at 6 a.m. Sunday morning.

In the opening game of the match the Lady Cardinals and the Mustangs battled back and forth before SMU claimed a 28-16 victory to take a 1-0 lead. Lamar quickly bounced back from the opening loss, grabbing a 25-18 win to tie the match at 1-1.

After appearing to grab a hold of the momentum of the match the Lady Cards could not capitalize and SMU took control of the match with a 25-19 win in game three. Trailing 2-1 in the match, Lamar was unable to respond again and the Ponies closed out the match with another 25-19 win.

Courtney Trevino and Ashley Todd led the way for the Lady Cardinals as both players registered double doubles. Trevino knocked down 12 kills and picked up 12 digs while Todd passed out 37 assists and scooped 12 digs. Lauren Holdorff also registered double digit kills for LU, knocking down 10.

Defensively the Lady Cardinals had three other players finish with double digit kills, led by Andrea Hamilton who picked up 17. Kaci Brewer and Genevieve Gladle finished the match with 14 and 10 digs respectively.

The Lady Cardinals, who will be staying at the University of Texas-San Antonio during the evacuation, are scheduled to play Wichita State at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday Sept. 4 in Wichita, Kan.
