LUBBOCK - For the second time on Saturday the Lamar University volleyball team dropped a five game decision at the Red Raider Roundup hosted by Texas Tech University, falling to Villanova 3-2.
The Lady Cardinals started the day wit a 3-2 loss to Texas Tech, before turning around an hour later to face the Wildcats.
Lamar dropped the opening game of the match 30-23 before taking control with a 30-15 win in game two, tying the game at a game apiece. In game two the Lady Cardinals won 30-26, but Villanova forced a deciding game five with a 30-24 win in game four. The deciding game went down to the wire, but Lamar could not pull out the win, falling 18-16.
Lamar dropped to 3-4 on the year with the loss, while Villanova improved to 2-2.
The Lady Cardinals were led by senior Molli Abel's 13 kills, while Kaci Brewer and Courtney Mitchell added 11 and 10 kills respectively. Adrianne Meengs passed out 46 assists and Andrea Hamilton led Lamar with 17 digs.
Villanova was led by Alona Cherkez who had 28 kills and 19 digs, while Dana Tartazky had 12 kills and 20 digs. Kacy Sellers had 13 kills and Chelsea Graman passed out 63 assists, while Emily Brown had 18 digs.
As a team Lamar out hit Texas Tech .176 to .158 and the Lady Cardinals posted 20 blocks as a team, while the Wildcats had just nine team blocks. Villanova had a strong defensive team effort with 76 digs, while Lamar collected 53.
The Lady Cards will be in action again on Monday night at 7:00 when they host South Dakota State in McDonald Gym.
