BEAUMONT - The Lamar University volleyball team could not finish off a pesky McNeese State squad on Tuesday night at Memorial Gym in Lake Charles, La., falling to the Cowgirls 3-2.
The loss snaps a 14-match win streak for the Lady Cards and is their first loss of Southland Conference play. The Lady Cardinals are now 18-8 on the year and 9-1 in SLC play, while McNeese improves to 13-11 and 7-3 in conference play.
The Cowgirls outlasted the Lady Cardinals in game four, after LU rallied back from a five point deficit to take a lead late in the game. McNeese finished off the game 30-28 and used their momentum to jump out to a big lead in game five.
In the fifth frame the Cowgirls bolted out to a 9-4 lead before the Lady Cardinals again rallied to tie the game a nine. With the match tied, McNeese outscored LU 6-2 over the next eight points to force match point at 14-11. With their backs against the wall, Lamar responded with a pair of points, but fell short of the comeback, falling 15-13.
In game one Lamar started out strong, building a 10 point lead at 21-11 before McNeese rallied for five straight points to cut the lead to 21-16. The Lady Cards responded to the Cowgirl run by closing out the game on a 10-4 run for a 30-20 win.
In game two the Cowgirls looked like they would roll past LU, jumping out to an early 9-5 lead, but the Lady Cardinals battled back and took a lead at the midway point. Lamar however could not capitalize on their run and McNeese rallied back to take the game 31-29.
In game three the Lady Cardinals used a strong run midway through the game to overtake the Cowgirls who held a 16-11. Lamar chipped away at the deficit and surged past McNeese for a 30-27 win.
For the match the Lady Cards received double-double performances from Ashley Todd, Adrianne Meengs and Destiny Mason. Mason had 12 kills and 16 digs, Meengs had 36 assists and 10 digs and Todd had 13 assists and 16 digs.
The offense was led by Kaci Brewer and Molli Abel who knocked down 15 and 14 kills respectively. Defensively Andrea Hamilton led the way with 26 digs while Genevieve Gladle added 15 digs.
McNeese was powered by Chanel Tyler and Alyson Jones who had 23 and 20 kills respectively, while Sarah Cartie passed out a match-high 55 assists. The Cowgirl defense was anchored by Jessica Strama who collected 26 digs.
Lamar will be back in action on Friday night a 7:00, when they travel to Huntsville, Texas to take on Sam Houston State University at Johnson Coliseum.
