LYNCHBURG, Va. — Lamar University dropped its final match of the Liberty Mountain Madness tournament Saturday afternoon at Liberty Arena, falling to High Point in straight sets, 25-22, 25-21, 25-16.
The Cardinals fell behind 6-3 before rallying with four consecutive points to take an 8-7 lead.
Rihanna Bryant,
Kinley Elms and
Maja Malinowska recorded kills during the run while Bryant added a service ace.
High Point answered with a 4-0 surge to reclaim the lead, but Lamar trimmed the deficit to one with a 3-1 run fueled by kills from Malinowska,
Grace Hill and
Nisaan Martinez.
Another 4-0 Panthers run pushed the lead to 23-18, putting High Point two points from the opening-set victory.
The Cardinals responded with four straight points to close within one. Malinowska accounted for two points during the stretch, and Martinez added a kill.
High Point halted the comeback attempt by scoring the final two points to secure the set.
The Panthers built a nine-point lead midway through the second set with a 5-0 run.
Lamar battled back with five consecutive points to cut the deficit to three. Elms recorded two kills during the rally.
High Point closed out the set by scoring two of the final three points to secure the victory.
Lamar trailed by two points early in the third set before using a 4-0 run to take a 6-4 lead.
Martinez recorded a kill during the stretch while
Katelyn Hughes added a service ace.
High Point answered with four consecutive points to regain control and did not trail again en route to the set victory.
MATCH NOTES
- Malinowska paced the Cardinals with nine kills, two service aces, two block assists and seven digs.
- Martinez and Elms added eight kills apiece while Hill recorded seven kills and five digs.
- Bryant finished with four kills and five digs.
- Hughes dished out 16 assists and added five digs while Alexa Gonzalez contributed 14 assists and three digs.
- Gabby Baker led the defensive effort with 12 digs and three assists.
