Lamar Volleyball Drops Two

NEW ORLEANS - The Lamar University volleyball dropped both of their matches Saturday at the Kathy Trosclair Memorial Tournament at the Reily Student Recreation Center in New Orleans, La., falling to New Orleans 3-1 and McNeese State 3-1.

In the first match of the day, the Lady Cardinals fell to the New Orleans Privateers 3-1.

Lamar jumped out to a big lead in game one, holding a seven point lead over the Privateers at 24-17 before UNO closed the gap. With the game tied at 28, the Lady Cards broke serve and closed out the game for a 30-28 win.

In game two the two teams battled back and forth the entire game, before UNO closed out the game 31-29. Game three saw the same back and forth action, with the Privateers holding on for a 30-28 win.

In game four the Privateers jumped out to an early six point lead, and held off the Lady Cardinals for a 30-24 win to close out the match.

The Lady Cardinals dropped the match despite out hitting UNO .160 to .148 and knocking down more kills at 68 to 69. Lamar also collected more digs the UNO (80-75) and out blocked the Privateers 14 to 11.

The difference in the match came at the service line, as LU committed 13 service errors to New Orleans' seven, and had only two aces as compared to UNO's nine.

Molli Abel led the way for the Lamar offense, knocking down 22 kills, while Buchi Okoh added 17. Freshman setter Adrianne Meengs picked up the first double-double of the season for Lamar, passing out 50 assists and digging 17 balls.

Three other players finished with double digit digs for Lamar, led by two Freshman Alex Brink's 20, Andrea Hamilton with 15 and Dayna Norwood who chipped in with 10.

In the second match the Lady Cardinals started off sluggish, falling in game one 30-19.

They turned the tide in the second game to take game two 30-28, but dropped games three and four 30-28, 30-25, as McNeese earned their first win of the season.

Ariel Drake and Meagan Adams led the way for Lamar with 16 and 13 kills apiece. In addition to her 13 kills, Adams scooped up 14 digs for the Lady Cards second double-double of the season. Ashley Todd and Adrianne Meengs passed out 36 and 12 assists respectively.

The Cardinals, now 0-3 on the season, will be in action again next Friday at the George Mason tournament in Fairfax Va.
