BEAUMONT, Texas - The Lamar University baseball team dropped their second game of the Cardinal Classic Saturday night, falling to the Kentucky Wildcats 6-1 at Vincent Beck Stadium.
The Wildcats jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, taking advantage of a rough start for Cardinal starter Derrick Gordon. Antone DeJesus singled to start the game and advanced to second on a balk, before reaching third on a wild pitch, strike three to Brian Hastings. Two batters later John Shelby singled in DeJesus, giving KU the 1-0 lead.
Gordon struck out four batters in the opening frame, but the wild pitch to Hastings proved to be costly.
Lamar tied the game at one in the bottom of the third inning, when Will Henderson doubled to left center, scoring Erik Kanaby who opened the inning with a single to center field.
The Wildcats posted two runs in the top of the sixth, one in the seventh and another two runs in the eighth for a five run advantage, and held on as Lamar failed to take advantage of several scoring opportunities.
The Cardinal loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth, but couldn't push a run across, as Kentucky pitcher Craig Snipp forced Henderson to pop up to end the game.
Snipp collected the win for Kentucky, throwing a complete game six hitter, striking out eight Cardinals and walking four.
Gordon took the loss for the Cardinals, going five and two thirds innings, allowing three earned runs on three hits, and striking out seven. Cody Williams threw two thirds of an inning of relief, giving up one run on three hits, while Allen Harrington pitched two and two thirds innings, allowing two runs on two hits and striking out five.
The Cardinals will be in action again Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. at Vincent Beck Stadium when they take on Arkansas State in the finale of the 2006 Cardinal Classic.
